For the past six years, we've been teaching a Haitian proverb to our social media followers every Monday. We originally started by publishing a written Creole proverb with its translation in the purpose to expose our followers to another side of the Haitian culture besides the food products we sell and culinary techniques we teach in classrooms and at farmers' markets around Portland.
At one point, our followers wanted to learn how to pronounce the proverbs. That was when we started posting videos of Elsy teaching how to pronounce the proverbs in Creole along with their literal translations and interpretations with palpable life and moral lessons. After six years, we are combining 365 of the most favorite proverbs in a book and also produce a link for our readers to read and learn how to pronounce them whenever and wherever they want.
The book will entertain you and the visitors at your office. It can be a go-to on your coffee table, on your bedside table, and even in your bathroom.
Some of the proverbs in the book are funny. Some of them will provoke the reader' thoughts. Some of them will make the reader smile. Some of them spin universal truths in a format that forces the reader to have an internal conversation for a deep personal reflection and introspection. The proverbs featured in the book transcend generations as the basic and fundamental moral issues humans face remain static in a chaotic world. At the end, some of the proverbs will transport the reader to the pre-colonial era of the Tainos who inhabited the island of Haiti prior to Christopher Columbus' arrival while some others will expose the readers to the colonial era of a group of people who was transported against their will to Santo Domingo and forced to communicate in a foreign language while staying deeply rooted in the reality they knew back in Africa. This Haitian Proverb Book will also come handy in a classroom around literary and ethical discussions.
The book will be out for Haitian Flag Day on May 18th. Get a copy for you, a neighbor, a friend, and your teacher friend!
The link to learn how to pronounce each proverb will be provided at the end of the book.
